This blog will simply inform consumers what vinyl upholstery really is, and what it’s made of. All Vinyl Fabrics is a large supplier of Vinyl Upholstery, including both marine vinyl and automotive vinyl fabrics.
Many people know common terms that include vinyl, such as in vinyl siding, vinyl records, vinyl flooring, vinyl gloves, vinyl upholstery, etc, but they probably do not know what it is, exactly. While someone can pretty commonly identify that leather is the hide of an animal, they can’t tell you what materials vinyl is produced from. Let’s investigate.
Vinyl is a man-made, synthetic material, not found in nature. Everyone has encountered plastic, and vinyl is actually a type of plastic that is made from ethylene (found in crude oil) and chlorine (found in regular salt). When processed to make vinyl, the ethylene and the chlorine are combined to form Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) resin, or simply, Vinyl.
Vinyl has been around since the 1920s, and was invented by scientists who wanted to develop a material that would help to manufacture everyday products in ways that were easier to produce, would be more durable, and would be cheaper than the raw materials that were available at the time. The idea stuck, because today, Vinyl has become the second largest manufactured and sold plastic resin in the world. And of course, we know the many uses of vinyl at All Vinyl Fabrics.
Vinyl is an adaptable material, which allows it to have many other uses than simply being covering or siding, upholstery, or marine fabric. It can combine with various additives and modifiers, which makes it suitable for use in manufacturing lots of products you might not expect.
